4 Ways Travel Books (That Aren’t Guide Books) Can Enhance Your Travels

In my guest post on My Itchy Travel Feet I described three ways that you can use travel books (NOT guide books) to enhance your travels. The Global Bookshelf has plenty of books available to help you really connect to your next destination:

Explore The CultureFind out what makes a country tick by exploring who they are to themselves. How do people interact with each other? How do they view themselves in the world? What are the normal customs? Exploring who the people are in their own country will mean you can interact with them in a much more meaningful way once you’re there.

Examine The History. Delve into the history of an area; not through dusty history text books but through novels and memoirs that tell the story of a place in more interesting ways. Learning how a country came to be can really help you understand how it is today as you visit.

Discover The Food. Who doesn’t love to try the food as they travel? You can do this even before you leave. Seek out cookbooks not only to find recipes you can try yourself but also to learn about the history of the food and the regionality of the cuisine. You’ll know just what your favourites are by the time you arrive.

Learn From Others. Our travelogue collection is extensive. These are the books and stories that really show what travel in an area is like. Find an author who travels in a style you do and read how they managed all the quirks and foibles during their trip. There is no better way to learn than to learn from others successes (and failures!).

Who Am I?

I’m Gillian. The traveler behind The Global Bookshelf.

In 2009/2010 my partner, Jason, and I embarked on a one year, fourteen country, trip around the world. I tried to read books from every country we visited but often couldn’t find what I was looking for or, more often, the hostel free-book exchange had a dearth of good books to choose from. Let’s just say I read a lot more John Grisham than I ever thought I would…and enjoyed them much more than you would imagine!

After returning home to Canada for a couple of years we have set off again to live in the world and experience travel from a much slower perspective. Now, with much more time, I am looking for books of all sorts about the places I’m in. I enjoy history books to give me a sense of how a country came to be and the struggles it endured. I like food books because we travel so much through the food of  a region. I read novels set in the places we visit to learn about culture and storytelling from a local perspective. And I turn to travelogues and memoirs to see how others have traveled in this place before me.
